Quantitative Evaluation of Experimental Bone Regeneration Using Indentation Tests

چکیده
OBJECTIVES To determine whether the macroindentation test can be applied to quantitatively assess bone regeneration. METHODS A 3.2 mm diameter transverse monocortical defect was created on the medial aspect of both proximal metaphyses of the tibia of male Unib-WH rats. For the macroindentation tests, we used 5.00 mm diameter indenters with a 3.2 mm tip. Defect testing was performed 1 to 12 weeks following the surgical procedures to compare the hardness of the newly developed tissue over the 12-week study period. Additional histological, morphological and physical/chemical data were obtained by optical and electronic microscopy, Raman, and energy dispersive x-ray spectrometry (EDS). RESULTS The mean indentation forces increased in a time-dependent manner from 4 to 12 weeks (p<0.001). Tests performed with the 5.0 mm diameter tip were not able to measure the indentation forces in the first week after the procedure. Moreover, in the second postoperative week indentation forces and the newly formed tissue within the spinal canal were greater than those measured in the fourth and eighth weeks. CONCLUSIONS The macroindentation test can be used to quantitatively assess bone regeneration in experimental studies. The choice of indenter tip diameter should consider the study design. Fast Identification of Poroelastic Parameters from Indentation Tests
A novel approach is presented for the identification of constitutive parameters of linear poroelastic materials from indentation tests. Load-controlled spherical indentation with a ramp-hold creep profile is considered. The identification approach is based on the normalization of the time-displacement indentation response, in analogy to the well-known one-dimensional consolidation problem. The ...
متن کاملDesign and Fabrication of a Portable 1-DOF Robotic Device for Indentation Tests
There are many tactile devices for indentation examinations to measure mechanical properties of tissue. The purpose of this paper is to develop a portable indentation robotic device to show its usability for measuring the mechanical properties of a healthy abdominal tissue. These measurements will help to develop suitable mathematical models representing abdominal tissue. A 1-DOF portable robot...
متن کاملRole of damage mechanics in nanoindentation of lamellar bone at multiple sizes: experiments and numerical modeling.
The aim of this paper is to show that damage mechanisms can account for the response of lamellar bone to nanoindentation tests, with particular regards to the decrease of indentation stiffness with increasing penetration depth and to the loss of contact stiffness during the unloading phase of the test. For this purpose, indentation experiments on bovine cortical bone samples along axial and tra...
متن کاملEvaluation of Influence of Zeolite/Collagen Nanocomposite (ZC) and Hydroxyapatite (HA) on Bone Healing: A Study on Rabbits
Bone healing is still a great challenge in orthopedic surgery and clinical practice. There is a dearth of research investigating the effect of Zeolite/Collagen (ZC) nanocomposite on bone regeneration. In the present study, a critical segmental defect of the rabbit femur was repaired using defects in femurs repaired by ZC nanocomposite, and the effects were examined histologically. In total, 45 ...

Background and Aim: The aim of this investigation was to evaluate the osteopromotion property of homogenous demineralized dentin matrix (HDDM) on experimental surgical bone defects in parietal bone of rabbits using the guided bone regeneration (G.B.R.) technique incorporating Paroguide collagen membrane. Materials and Methods: Surgical bone defects were created in 6 Newzland white rabbits (2 d...
